Life On A Dead Planet

Amsterdam, March 06, 2020

On this day, back in 2020, I took this photo in Amsterdam. It's one of my favourite photos, there's something about the movement and the empty space behind it. It was taken in the early morning - these streets are never this empty and I think it might have been during the COVID lockdown, although that may have come into effect later that month - during a solitary photo walk through the city.

It was so quiet everywhere. No planes heading for Schiphol, no cars weaving their way through the town. Just the sound of the birds and the wind and the quiet city, taking a breather after centuries of endless toil. This girl on her bike suddenly came out of nowhere, and not expecting me to be there, had to swerve to avoid me.

I clicked the shutter almost as an involuntary reaction, but the shot worked, the out-of-focus girl adding to the moment.

Probably taken with my XT-2 and an 18mm f/2 lens
